Although parts of the Portes du Soleil sit at a moderate altitude, it's northern situation (the most Northern in France) means that it often gets better snow than most other French resorts which are much higher. Many of the runs are northfacing, so they hold their snow long after other slopes have turned to slush, making it an awe-inspiring ski area. The snow has been so good in the last few years that Avoriaz stayed open until 1st May this year.
